Facebook is a social media platform that many people are literally addicted to. Their whole lives get posted for their friends to see and experience with them, but what many people don’t realize is that it’s also become a place of great danger and if you’re not careful, you may bring some unsuspecting trouble to your virtual door.

It’s easy to get carried away and post things on Facebook without paying too much attention, whether you’re excited or annoyed.  The trouble is, some of those posts and comments could fall into the wrong hands and come back to bite you in the backside when you least expect it.  But, there are a few things you can do to try and protect yourself:

  • Delete those drunken photos: Although it may have seemed like a magnificent idea at the time, uploading drunken photos onto Facebook is a no-no. Unless your security is mega tight, you may want to consider just deleting them as any prospective employer or another official person could easily get their hands on them.
  • Don’t advertise when you’ll be away: Again, it’s easy to get excited when you’re about to go on holiday. But, for any lurking thief out there all it’s doing is advertising when all your worldly possessions will be available to raid. Even if you only post to friends, how regularly do you update that list? Can you trust all the people on there?
  • Delete pictures of your ex: It just saves any potential conflict when the new squeeze comes along and lets you forget those painful memories as they will no longer appear in services such as Time Hop if you delete them.

  • Remove yourself from tagged posts: As well as controlling what you post, you need to keep an eye on what those cheeky friends of yours post too. To prevent further dodgy tagging, go to Settings, Timeline, and Tagging, and Who can add things to my timeline.  Then simply flick the switch to review posts – on.
  • Don’t display your phone number: If hackers are skimming people’s accounts, why give them sensitive data like that to play with. People that you want to have your phone number will already have it, and if not they can still send you a message asking for it, so there is no need to store it on there. Delete it now.
  • Don’t add your boss as a ‘friend’: It’s never a good idea to mix business with pleasure, and this goes for Facebook too. It will only end in tears if you decide to add your boss to your list of Facebook friends. However careful you think you are, there will be an instance that will trip you up at work such as a sick day where you aren’t really sick or a rant about a colleague, so just to be safe, don’t do it.
  • Keep your location quiet: You don’t need to share every waking moment with Facebook, and there are some instances where it’s probably best to keep your location a secret.  This includes your home address and dropping the kids off at school. Why let people know where you live and when you aren’t there?
  • Don’t disclose your date of birth: This is one vital, valuable piece of information in the eyes of an identity thief, so don’t make it easy for them.
