The UK Sets a Good Example with Green Energy Production Efforts

Latest Hot DEALS

It’s been confirmed this month that at least half of the electricity generated in the UK is done so by either nuclear power plants or renewable energy methods. This is an amazing effort made by the UK and hopefully, one that others will seek to follow. The increase in green power generation comes at a time when coal production is slowing as the UK hopes to abandon using it by 2025 completely.

The UK has only nine remaining coal-fired power stations left in the whole country that are still able to generate electricity. Coal has been on the decline for a while now, and much of the decision to bump up renewables and phase out coal comes from the UK’s obligation to meet its 2020 renewable energy targets. The UK has already been warned by ministers on the Energy and Climate Change Committee (ECC) that it’s likely to miss its renewable energy goal unless significant policy improvements are undertaken.

Rumors are amidst that the solar surge will disappear soon too. Payback schemes for feeding electricity back into the grid have already been slashed by as much as 65 percent and led to a wave of fear in the sector and some job losses. There is also talk about a proposed tax change for commercial rooftop installations, that if went ahead would adversely affect many small businesses, hospitals, and schools, increasing their tax obligations by as much as eight times!  Paul Barwell, CEO of the Solar Trade Association, said, “In some cases, it would actually send installations into negative returns.

But, despite the negativity, the UK are still going strong and moving in the right direction regarding renewable energy production. Scotland is looking to add a new offshore kite farm to its waters by 2025, and both Cumbria and Grimsby are also home to two of the world’s largest wind farms. With all of these in operation, the UK’s need for fossil fuels will fall even further and will eventually disappear altogether.
