Unfortunately, 2016 saw a lot of dishonesty in terms of fake news that’s being produced – perhaps even more than ever. News that been embellished, as well as news that’s entirely fictional, hits our media every day. Below you will find a brief rundown of the top fake news stories to hit the headlines in 2016:
- Corona Beer: It was alleged that after his death, Antonino Fernandez, founder of Corona beer, left a whopping $208 million to the people of the Spanish village, Cerezales. This is the village that Fernandez was born and grew up. But, the story turned out to be untrue, and none of these poor villagers were left any of his inheritance.
- Facebook’s Live Space Stream: Footage was posted on Facebook that was said to be a live feed of the International Space Station (ISS). It was subsequently made available on various sites including UNILAD, INTERESTINATE, and Viral USA and was collecting a lot of views, likes, and shares. However, no mention of the stream was mentioned on NASA’s website, and they eventually confirmed it was a hoax and there was no spacewalk going on at the ISS that day.
- Grieving Kangaroo: This picture is not as sweet as you may first be led to believe. At first glance, it looks as though a kangaroo is mourning the loss of his mate by picking her up and dropping her back down again. But, after analysis of the images by veterinary experts, they think there is a different act going on here, and that’s one of necrophilia.

- U.S. Election Results Map: Fake maps were posted on Facebook and other social media sites trying to explain the reason behind the unexpected win. Apparently, one map was comparing the 2013 crime rate against that of the 2016 US Presidential election. Other maps that were produced were simply incomplete or for a completely different past event.
- Trump and The Simpsons: As one of America’s favorite family’s, The Simpsons have made many predictions over the years, many of which have come true including the election of Donald Trump as president.
