Amazon is one of many big companies that are looking to power 100% of its services through the use of renewable energy forms, and its latest venture involves building a 100 turbine, 253-megawatt wind farm in Texas. The company are hoping to open the plant late 2017 and is just one more move towards achieving its targets. It is being developed in partnership with Lincoln Clean Energy, and as CEO Declan Flanagan said, it will become a “key driver of the transition to renewable power” in the United States. By the end of 2016 it looks as though they will already be achieving around 40% of all Amazon Web Services power coming from renewables, so is already almost halfway there.
Amazon currently has wind farms in Indiana, North Carolina, and Ohio and also have a solar farm in Virginia so it should not be too hard for them to achieve their goals. Other companies that are also looking to achieve 100% renewable power are Google, Apple, and Facebook, so it will be interesting as to who will get there first. While Google is the largest, non-utility purchaser of renewable energy, Apple already achieved 93% renewable energy in 2015. Facebook also chose Texas as a location to build a wind farm and is hoping that it will help them achieve their goal of getting 50% of its data center power from renewables by 2018. It’s great to see so many big companies supporting the use of renewable energy and even smaller ones too, like Salesforce, and as long as we can all keep up the good work, we will win the battle against climate change.
