For the first time ever, electricity demand is not increasing, and suppliers are beginning to notice this in a big way. With customers now being able to produce their own electricity, fossil fuel power plants are taking a huge hit which is pushing the price of traditional electricity through the roof. But, all this is doing is persuading more people to join the renewable revolution to get their energy needs, hence forcing fossil fuel plants out of the picture completely.
Renewable energy hurts utilities in two main ways. The first is that lowers demand for fossil fuel energy as utilities usually have to buy from the power plant it’s contracted with. The second is that because solar energy produces loads of energy during the day but none at night, electricity demand during the day is low and doesn’t rise until the evening when everyone then needs it all at once.
The fact is that customers want renewable energy, so if utility companies want to survive they are going to adopt this philosophy and somehow jump onboard. One idea would be to have community solar or wind projects where renewable energy could be bought directly from the utility company. But, as good as it sounds it may not be that easy to implement as many consumers have already made the decision to produce their own electricity and is unlikely that they will revert back now. But, there are still many customers that haven’t yet changed to renewable energy sources and would be the perfect opportunity for them to do so.
