There’s no stopping Elon Musk when he gets an idea in his head. If he puts his mind to something, it will get done. At least, that’s what his pretty successful track record so far tells us. Now, along with the creation of the massive Giga factory in which to produce those mind-blowingly efficient batteries, Tesla is now expanding its paint shop at the Fremont plant too.
Some critics of Tesla have slammed the company saying that because of air quality permits limiting the emissions level the plant is able to emit, its new paint shop will only create a bottleneck for their Model 3 launch and as a result will only be able to produce around 220,000 cars per year. But, Tesla completely disagrees with this and a spokesperson for the company confirmed: “Our paint shop remains on track to accommodate 500,000 in 2018”.
Half a million cars is a lot, but Tesla has come good with everything they’ve pledged so far, so why not this? The paint shop itself will expand to accommodate the extra vehicles it will manufacture, and of course, the company will comply with all environmental laws in regards to emissions while doing so. The cost of the Fremont factory expansion is estimated to be around $1.3 billion, so is no small feat. But, once in place, there will be no stopping the Tesla Model 3’s from flying out. Although an increase of 400,000 cars per year to manufacture may sound ambitious, it’s not impossible, and if Tesla sticks to the plan, this is what will happen.
