Meet Slo – The 3D Printed 35mm Camera

Latest Hot DEALS

Amos Dudley took 3D printing to a whole new level when his designed, developed and printed a 35mm film camera entirely, including the lens, by using a 3D printer.  Dudley is a digital designer who wanted to create something that had not been done before. Although cameras themselves have been 3D printed, none (until now) have also included a 3D printed lens.

The way in which Slo is printed is in modules.  This gave Dudley greater flexibility to change any aspect of the design as it was being created.  The camera body holds 35mm film which is loaded through the back of the camera and a sprocket rod inside pulls the roll out as it needs to.  To adjust the camera’s aperture, it just takes a simple twist, and the shutter speed can also be adjusted.

The shutter proved to be one of the most challenging pieces for Dudley, and he ended up employing techniques that date back as far as 1885 to make it work.  This involved adapting a shutter that was designed by C.J. Wollaston and is based on four blade pieces connecting to two shutter buttons on the top of the camera.  When one of the buttons is pressed, a rack-and-pinion drive pulls each pair and exposes the image.  The lens also caused problems for Dudley and after numerous attempts, he discovered that by dipping a lens in a clear resin and hardening it with a UV light created the lens he needed.

Dudley tried the lens using an Olympus mirrorless camera before using it on the 3D camera and found that it worked well.  Although the images created were not quite the images you get from modern technologies that are around today, it is a start and still an incredible achievement nonetheless.
