Go and grab a glass – it’s time to celebrate! Recent studies have just been carried out that confirm that wine is not so bad for us after all and that it can help the body in becoming more resistant to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The study was published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and goes on to explain how sommeliers have less chance of contracting one of these diseases than most others.
Scientists conducting the study are led to believe that where sommeliers have acute senses of smell, they also much have larger, thicker parts of the brain. It is this thickness that is said to prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s from developing. The author of the study and head of neuropsychology at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas, Dr. Sarah Banks, states, “Though we don’t know for sure, there is a possibility that when it comes to the brain, thicker is better. It seems like if you have more brain in those areas, it’ll take longer to feel the effects of the disease, but it’s speculation.”

It is only a pilot test that has been carried out so far, so more detailed research is needed before any medical breakthroughs can be declared, but the results are looking promising. And while the studies that have been completed so far are pointing towards wine as a good deterrent to some harmful diseases, then who are we to argue? Bottoms up, everyone!
