Volkswagen announced earlier this year their intention to release a futuristic EV bus type vehicle, named BUDD-e and this could be just the beginning of their electric journey. The car giant is then looking to release a further four electric vehicle models following that, all of which are expecting to have a range of at least 400 kilometers. All of the new models will be sold in the U.S., Europe, and China and a preview type concept car will be unveiled at the Paris Auto Show later this year.
VW Brand Chief, Herbert Diess, confirms that the new electric model is smaller that the compact Golf hatchback on the outside but has an interior that is comparable to that of a midsize Passat. They are also hoping to achieve a range of between 400-600 kilometers with this particular model, which is pretty good for your standard EV. But it won’t go into production until late 2018 and when it does hit the market it will sell at prices comparable to current VW diesel models.

The car manufacturing giant has set itself a goal of selling a million battery-electric cars by 2025. To do this, there will be major changes required within VW’s production facilities and supply chain. One such change may involve VW building its European battery production plant near the existing VW engine factory in Germany. At an estimated planning and building cost of around $11 billion, it looks set to stomp all over Tesla’s $5 billion Gigafactory that’s currently being built in Nevada. But, whether it will amount to this, we will have to see.
For Tesla, it is all about giving the consumer sleek designs and fast acceleration. But, VW’s approach is somewhat different in offering more ordinary type vehicles for the average consumer. This may be a harder for sale for VW, at least until the range ability issues improve as is less to grab people’s attention with. But, with the right marketing and advertising, anything is possible.
