Federal Highway Administration Calls For Green Changes To Be Made To State Highways

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is part of the United States Department of Transportation, specializing in highways and highway transportation.  This week they have called upon states and local officials to nominate routes where drivers can source alternative fuels in “zero-emission ” and “alternative fuel” corridors.  By supporting this initiative states will be contributing to the nation’s Fixing America’s Surface Transportation” (FAST) Act.

If the United States are going to achieve their green goals set out in front of them, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent from 2014 to 2050, then it is evident that big measures will need to be taken, and this could be the first step towards achieving them.  As stated by Federal Highway Administrator, Gregory Nadeau, “By identifying where alternative fueling stations can be found, we can accelerate the use of innovative next-generation vehicles, improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure our transportation network meets the needs of the 21st-century drivers.”

The FWHA is asking for the first, initial nominations for the corridors to be in from states by the August 21 as much time and planning will be needed to pull this off successfully.  As part of the provision, officials are asked to designate national plug-in electric vehicle charging and hydrogen, propane and natural gas fueling corridors along major highways.  U.S. Transportation Secretary, Anthony Fox, states, “We can’t have Smart Cities without Smart Highways” and “Making sure drivers with alternative fuel vehicles can use the national highways system, rather than being limited only to local areas, is the next step in advancing America’s transportation network.”

So, there are exciting times ahead for America as they get one step closer to becoming global leaders in green technology.  There are sure to be issues that need to be addressed even once planning is underway, but once it does start to become implemented across the nation, everyone will be able to benefit from it, either from being an alternative fuel car owner or by just enjoying the cleaner air.  Either way, good things are to come for all so watch this space.
