So, are we all ready to take on the futuristic world that technology is promising to bring?  Hopefully, you are as there is no escaping it.  The fourth industrial revolution is upon us now, and there are certain aspects of it that will completely change the way in which we live today, whether we like it or not.  Technology is getting more advanced by the minute, and three components that are set to play a significant part in this transformation are 3D printing, Virtual and Augmented Reality and the Internet of Things (IoT).

3D Printers

3D printers have already come a long way since they were first introduced to the consumer market, but they are still advancing at an incredible rate even today.  One very significant achievement in the world of 3D printing comes from Amsterdam in the form of a 13-room 3D Print Canal House.  This building/museum was printed in its entirety using a giant 3D printer called KamerMaker. There is soon to be a second model of KamerMaker. Also, that has the ability to print an area the size of a water bottle every second.

Other companies such as Shapeways are making their money in the 3D printing sector by selling individualized 3D printed items for the home such as prints or wall shelves.  The customer has the option to design their item using a 3D sketch app like GravitySketch, then send it across to Shapeways who will print it out and send it back to you!  You can even have a choice of the materials that can be used to print it with.  Already shipping more than 200,000 per month, it is clear that people love this idea, and it won’t be long before they start to invest in their own at-home 3D printers.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

This is another area in technology that has been accelerating quite quickly over the past few years.  The software has now being designed that will enable customers to see if an item will fit into the space they want and what it will look like when it is there, all through the use of augmented reality.  Both Littlewoods and Very have developed these types of AR apps.  With the use of this type of technology, users get a much better feel for the item they are about to purchase and it brings a whole new meaning to the words try before you buy!

The Internet of Things (IoT)

This covers a wide range of items as it relates to the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items that are embedded with software that enables the collection and exchange of data between the network.  This can also include home items such as light bulbs, thermostats, and refrigerators.  By changing to this type of technology, consumers will potentially see big savings while saving the environment at the same time.   Voice-activated platforms have become increasingly popular within the home with the introduction of products such as Amazon’s Echo which acts as a personal assistant which can complete tasks such as turning on the lights if you ask her to.  Google too is working on a similar device that will, of course, have Google searching capabilities included.

As well as all of your IoT devices, there is also a product out now that will act as a central hub for all of them.  Called the MATRIX device the device will download apps such as ones that will sense when you get out of bed and turn the shower on for you.  It’s also touchless too and will complete tasks such as turning out the lights just by the user giving a simple hand gesture.  Although not quite ready for sale, the company are taking pre-orders so get your name down fast if you want to make use of one of these fabulous machines.

All of these products will most certainly change the world in which we know it.  Every home may not yet have a 3D printer, AR or VR or smart technology, but times are changing, and it will not be long before they do.  As soon as the technology becomes cheap enough and mass produced, the 3D printer and other innovative products will be as popular in peoples’ homes as a television and microwave are now.
