Are you getting annoyed with the rising costs of energy these days?  Well, if so, many things can be done to help line your pockets with the savings you will make and save the environment at the same time.  Below is just a list of some of the ways that you could upgrade your home to make it more energy efficient, and some of which could be done without the need to hire any builders.

1.  Cooler roof:  You can make your home cooler in general by having a cooler roof.  To achieve this, you will need to apply a cool roof coating onto the existing roof.  This will automatically bring the temperature of the roof down by as much as 50-60 degrees and will cost around $100 for a 4.75-gallon container.

2.  Metal roof:  If you are looking to replace your whole roof, then regarding energy efficiency, you may want to consider a metal roof.  A metal roof is considerably stronger than most other types of roof and is fireproof too.  Although pricier to both purchase and install than many other types of roof they are much more environmentally friendly and will last a lot longer too.  Typically a metal roof will set you back around $3.50 to $5.00 per square foot if you do it yourself, but with installation around $7.50 to $12.00 per square foot.

3.  Energy-efficient windows:  Double paned windows are an excellent way to retain heat within the home in the winter but also prevent heat gain in the summer.  They will also block out more noise than one pane windows.  Typically most average sized double pane windows will cost between $500-$700 including the installation of them.

4.  Green Frames: If your budget will only allow you to do some sprucing up, then using an eco-safe paint on wooden frames is a great way to strengthen the wood and make the place look nicer in the meantime.  However, if you are looking for a replacement for those worn out windows, then vinyl is a good way to go.  Typically around half the price of wooden windows, vinyl are a very eco-friendly alternative and good in rainy weather, unlike wood.

5.  Insulation: Soy foam is a green alternative to spray or traditional batting insulation.  Although it may not be as cheap as other options, it does work well, and it is much more environmentally friendly than the other types if insulation.
