Many people do not realize the real potential that rechargeable batteries can give us.  Regularly discussed within the automotive industry, but rarely anywhere else, there are many more uses for rechargeable batteries than many of us realize.  Now that auto manufacturers seem to have got their head around the way in which these batteries work most efficiently in vehicles, they have now tried their hand in a different scenario but using the same technology.  The race is now on between BMW and Tesla, so it seems as they both plow on with making rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for home use.

Munich-based automotive manufacturer, BMW, have just recently made the announcement that they are heading in the direction of producing at-home batteries as part of their next ‘green’ venture.  Many people are beginning to invest in this type of device and the most commonly known option available at the moment seems to be Tesla’s Powerwall.  Their lithium battery will cost you around $3,000 and has a capacity of just 6.4 kWh, whereas the battery that BMW are about to unleash on us is expected to have either a 22kWh or 33kWh capacity. That kind of capacity is enough to power your whole house for a day!

Although a confirmed price is yet to be revealed for the BMW at-home batteries, prices are expected to be much more value for money than Tesla’s PowerWall.  One of the main reasons for this is that they will be recycling old batteries from BMW i3’s that are no longer up to scratch for use in the car and turning them into super-efficient home energy storage systems.

Article Update; BMW is Partnering with American energy provider SolarCity® to offer 360° Electric Lifestyle customers in select markets the opportunity to generate their solar power to fuel their vehicle and power their lives. SolarCity® will not sell any BMW’s Charging Station Units.
