In March this year, headlines were made as Google DeepMind‘s AlphaGo System defeated Professional Go Player, Lee Sedol in a five-match tournament that took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, South Korea.  This was quite an achievement for the multi-billion corporation and could pave the way for the development of new technologies within the healthcare system that is based on the same artificial intelligence.

Google DeepMind is a London based artificial intelligence company that was founded in 2010 as DeepMind Technologies.  In 2014, the already budding business was snapped up by Google in a sale that cost them $500 million and was transformed into Google DeepMind.  It was around this time that the AlphaGo project was formed to see how deep learning techniques could be used to defeat professional human players in the game Go.  They proved their success in March after beating the 9-dan professional Go player 4-1.

This is seen as a significant victory for Google DeepMind, and they are now hopeful to use this technology to make great advances in the world of healthcare.  A separate health division of Google DeepMind was launched earlier this year that will be using the same deep learning techniques that were employed in the AlphaGo system.  Having already formed a valuable partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, U.K. that will be using the machine learning to apply to diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

Because the artificial intelligence is based on reinforcement learning, it is able to teach itself by learning from data and self-play.  Reinforcement learning is similar to the way in which humans learn and happens while the computer plays against itself.  The more it plays,  the better it gets.  The same can be applied to healthcare in various ways, and this is just the beginning for AlphaGo and Google DeepMind.
