It’s all go in the technology world at the moment as Microsoft are now going to be joining the automotive market. It is no secret that Google has been dabbling in the autonomous driving field for quite some time now and with rumors of the so-called Apple Car circulating, perhaps Microsoft was feeling a little left out. However, their involvement may not be quite the same as the other two rivals.
Google have a range of self-driving, autonomous cars. Some of these cars are ones that are already on the market that has been specially adapted, like the Toyota Prius or the Audi TT, but Google also has their own custom designed car too. They are looking to make these type of vehicles available to the public by 2020 and four states have already passed laws to allow the driving of autonomous vehicles on public roads.
So, now Microsoft have decided to join in the fun, but in a slightly different way to Google and Apple. Instead of creating the actual vehicle, Microsoft is looking to develop the software that powers these autonomous vehicles. They intend to work with several automotive manufacturers to develop ways of how to merge this software with the vehicle’s systems.
One of the reasons for Microsoft wanting to get involved is they understand how much time is spent in the car commuting of traveling, and if the driving were to become autonomous that would allow us more free time to do what we wanted and achieve more with our time. With technology advancing at super speed, it will not be long before these type of ‘driverless’ vehicles are on the road, even as early as 2019, so watch this space!.
