In today’s society, the 3D printers are being used all around us. From printing a coffee cup, to making your own wind turbine, 3D printers have the ability to build many things, and scientists are now making a breakthrough in using them to fabricate patterned membranes.
Researchers are looking to transform the current long winded process of making patterned membranes (profiled membranes) into a new revolutionized process involving 3D printing. Instead of etching silicon molds and using polymer to set them, then having to wait for it to harden, by using this form of technology, any pattern could be designed quickly at the touch of a few buttons.
In using a customized photolithography process, scientists have discovered that the increased surface pattern of the 3D membranes also increased the conductivity factor by two or even three sometimes. Membranes have properties similar to that of a resistor in a battery, and by increasing the conductivity at the same time, we are lowering the resistance, which has proved to be very useful to scientists in this field.
This new wave of 3D printing for membranes is set to continue with the team conducting more research and development into the project. They hope to develop new membranes as well as study the current ones to get a deeper understanding as to the geometry and chemistry involved in the printing of them. 3D printing is something that is going to be around for quite some time and will only get better, so why not make use of this brilliant technology and develop it in a way we can use it for everything.
