It’s something that’s been talked about for a while now, but so far, tiny details have been revealed about the Tesla Gigafactory and its mass production of batteries. However, that is all about to change in March this year when the company is set to release further information at the International Battery Seminar & Exhibit.

Kurt Kelty is Tesla’s Senior Director of Cell Supply Chain & Business Development and is also one of the company’s top battery scientists. In fact, he may just be one of the best of his profession in the whole world. Previous to working for Tesla, Kelty founded and directed Panasonic U.S. battery R & D lab. At the seminar on March 22, Kelty will give a keynote presentation about “Gigafactory Material Sourcing and Cell Production,” and hopefully many more details will be revealed about the company’s upcoming plans and movements.

As described in the brochure, Kelty’s presentation will give a deeper insight into how celled energy products such as the Powerwall and Powerpack are produced in the factory, as well as examining the status on material sourcing and sustainable material sourcing. Jeff Dahn, Tesla’s battery cell research partner, will follow Kelty and give his keynote presentation based on “Surprising Chemistry in Li-Ion Cells.” Dahn’s many years of research is centered on NMC Li-ion cells and increasing the energy density and shelf life of them. To obtain a higher energy density, it’s essential the operating voltage of the NMC Li-ion cells are increased. But, a reaction occurs between the electrolyte and the positive electrode at high voltages. So, the talk explains how these harmful reactions could be virtually stopped, resulting in NMC Li-ion cells that have the ability to operate at high potential.

Both presentations should be well worth listening to and may reveal more valuable secrets about Tesla’s Gigafactory plans. So, watch this space for more details to come in March.
