Thermal Imaging Specialists Buys This Little Drone’s Maker for $134 Million

Best Deal of the day

Flir is an American company based in Wilsonville, Oregan that specializes in the design and production of pretty much anything in relation to thermal imaging cameras and sensors. They’ve been going since 1978 and are the leading company in their area of expertise.  And, they’re are about to get even bigger following the purchase of a Norwegian drone maker, Prox Dynamics, for a whopping $134 million.

Prox Dynamics are the company that is responsible for the Black Hornet drone that’s used by both the military and law enforcement officials in missions needing surveillance or reconnaissance.  Despite the drone being equipped with three cameras, it’s still compact enough to fit in your pocket.  And, with the manufacturers having built projects for the British Army, U.S. Marines, the Australian Army, and Norway’s Armed Forces, you know the drone will be very good at what it does.

This isn’t the first time the two companies have crossed paths.  Flir cameras are already being used in Prox’s drones (as well as various others around the globe).  One major player that’s already in business with Flir is leading Chinese drone manufacturer, DJI.  Together they are working on a project that involves making a drone camera that can work perfectly in the dark.  However, at the moment it’s still illegal to fly drones at night without first obtaining a special Federal Aviation Administration waiver, so it may be a while before this model hits the consumer market.
