Research has been carried out that looks into the power of the voice and how intelligence is conveyed through speech. While some people may feel much more comfortable writing a proposal of some description than speaking it, the majority of those on the receiving end would rather listen to it than read it. But, will either make you sound more intelligent than the other? The results from studies have shown that although people feel that you would sound smarter and would communicate better via written word it’s actually your voice that accentuates your intelligence. The power of spoken language is incredible and it’s the one form of communication that uncovers what people are really thinking and how they came to that conclusion.
Being a great communicator and having the ability to convey your message to others in spoken word is a quality that will get you places. There is no point in being the best if you can’t show or tell people your ideas. Experiments were conducted as part of the research that involved asking 18 MBA students to prepare a pitch to their dream employer as to why they would be the best candidate to work for the company. Then over 160 evaluators watched one video, listened to one pitch, or read one transcript before assessing the candidates in terms of heir competence, intelligence, and thoughtfulness and how much of a positive impression they made. Finally, the evaluators reported whether they would have hired them had a position been available.
The results of the studies showed that individuals that came across positive were more likeable and subsequently employers were more interested in hiring them. And, compared to those who read the transcripts, those who heard pitches appeared to have the greater intellect. Although there are some obvious benefits to the written word, the spoken word should not be forgotten and should be used as much as possible. It’s by far the best way to get across who you really are and, as proven, the most effective form of communication.
