More people jump on board the renewable energy ship every day, and it’s no real surprise when you look at the amount of money they can potentially save. Below are seven different renewable energy techniques that currently power people’s homes:
- Solar Ovens: We thought we start with the more simple ideas and work our way up. The solar oven can be bought, but it can also be made with just a few materials and a little time. On its own it’s hardly going to get you off-grid, but is a start in the right direction anyway.
- Tesla Powerwall: This system works well alongside any home renewable generator and has the ability to store several kilowatts of electricity to be used at a time when needed. It can be set up to recharge off the grid when prices are low and discharge when they are high, saving you lots of money in the long run. Another thing to look out for with the Powerwall is upcoming legislation that may even allow you to receive tax credit for connecting your device to the grid.
- Rooftop Solar Panels: These are probably the most well-known home renewable energy device and are now available in the whole range of shapes and sizes and some that are even freestanding. Only a few square feet of solar panels are needed for the average home, so is an option worth considering.
- Hydropower: For obvious reasons, this is not a suitable option for most people. But, if you are lucky enough to have your own source of flowing water on your property then you can divert some of this to power a turbine and thus your home.
- Solar Air Conditioning: This method uses heat from the sun to cool your home and is an excellent way to make the most of the free energy.
- Wind Turbines: You do need quite a lot of land in order to have a wind turbine, but for those that do, it’s a great way to power your home at little or no cost. They are more stable than solar panels and generally a far better investment (depending on where you live).
- Solar Water Heating: On the opposite end of the scale to solar air conditioning is solar water heating where you use the sun to heat your home instead. This system is far cheaper than gas or electricity and is much easier to install than solar panels.
