6 Next Generation Battery Technologies

Various products are being released that are based on next-gen battery technologies and below is a list of the six we think are going to take the world by storm (at least in one way or another):

Gold nanowire battery:  This little beauty was created accidentally by a group of researchers at the University of California.  The nanowire battery is made of gold, electrode nanowires surrounded by an electrolyte gel similar to Plexiglas, and layers of manganese dioxide.

The greenest of green battery:  Over at the University of Maryland, researchers have looked to develop a new material that can be used in batteries that are inexpensive and green.  Oak leaves have the ability to be heated up to 1,000 degrees Celsius.  This kills all the existing carbon structures while introducing electrolytes to the leaf’s pores.  Doing this creates a plant-based anode that works pretty much the same as a traditional battery.

Edible saltwater battery:  Although there really is no need, this battery is that eco-friendly that you could eat it if you wanted to.  Jay Whitacre at Aquion Energy created this battery that is largely made up of dirt, cotton, carbon, and saltwater and proves that batteries too can be environmentally friendly and still be efficient at the same time.

Longer lasting sugar battery:  A team at Virginia Tech have taken Maltodextrin and used it as fuel once isolated from the sugar.  Upon mixing with air, the battery releases electrons from the sugary liquid which in turn, generates electricity.

Dissolving battery:  It may sound a little odd, and of course, this type of battery will not be needed by most people, but it’s certainly innovative nonetheless.  These could be used in single-use applications and would help stop the build up of those batteries currently stacked up in landfills.  The batteries are designed to self-destruct upon being triggered by light, heat or liquid and then dissolve in water once used.  The team responsible for these crazy little batteries are from Iowa State University.

Instant charging graphene battery:  A team at Australia’s Swinburne University have created a battery that is durable to last almost forever, and has the ability to charge faster than most other devices out there thanks to the graphene.  In just a few seconds, a new battery can be charged 100 percent.
