Boulting Technology has joined forces with the ABB to design and manufacture their first 100kA low voltage (LV) switchboard.  This partnership formed following the realization of the rise in what industrial units and commercial buildings need in terms of power applications that require high fault tolerance levels.  By identifying this trend early on, the partnership should be able to secure a pretty steady customer base as businesses learn of the savings that can be made by using a low voltage switchboard.

The rise in demand for power generation and usage comes primarily from the introduction of smart technologies across the nation and the fact that most building now uses multiple energy sources mixing electric with renewable energies such as solar or wind power.  Also, with automation advancements being made, the increased need for higher safety measures and the demand for better energy efficiency it became apparent that more flexible power management devices were needed.

The way in which the partnership worked was with ABB providing its latest model of circuit breakers while Boulting set to work designing and testing the new, ‘future-proof’, low voltage switchboard. The circuit breaker designed by ABB ensures maximum protection from high voltage and frequency loads while continuously monitoring the power flow.  And, because the wiring and software are already embedded into the circuit breaker there are no additional relays, sensors or other electrical component needed.  This is one area that has helped keep production costs to a minimum.

Along with all of these other great features, the low voltage switchboard has the software specifications of the ABB’s SACE Emax 2 that allows the circuit breaker to monitor the network and make data available on demand.  Remote access and control are other features that can also be used.  Lastly, the circuit breaker also can switch off up to 15 non-critical loads in case of an emergency.
