Earth’s First Freeform 3D Printed Home

Latest Hot DEALS

The world of 3D printing is a fascinating one, and the possibilities this technology can bring are enormous as Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo (WATG) have just demonstrated to the world. Winning the first prize in the Freeform Home Design Challenge with the teams effort, Curve Appeal, shows just how far we can take this if we want to.

Although this is not the first attempt at 3D printing a home, it is the world’s first freeform printed residence, meaning that does not conform to regular or traditional shaped buildings.  In the Freeform Home Design Challenge, the aim was for the participants to design a 600-800 square foot home that would house a family and did not follow traditional styles in its structure, construction, aesthetics, ergonomics and building systems.  The first prize winner would then celebrate with an $8000 prize and get to have their 3D home built by Branch Technology‘s state of the art printer.

WATG managed to bag the top prize with their very cleverly designed Curve Appeal.   All participants of the challenge were encouraged to use Branch Technology’s patented Cellular Fabrication (C-Fab) in their design.  C-Fab is a method that produces a building solution that can be squeezed out of a nozzle to form 3D shapes and designs.  By carefully mixing the right materials engineers can create stable, livable 3D houses using similar processes to nature.

The Curve Appeal design will begin to come to life in 2017 when it is constructed.  Even though it may look like a natural rock formation, inside the house has been designed to be airy and light-filled and by using large panes of glass will give the inhabitants the chance to feel at home with nature and the beautiful surrounding it has to offer.  Who knows, if enough people take an interest, maybe we can see them coming to an estate agent near us soon!
